Tykes of Terror

Got to bed around midnight. Didn't mean to wake so early, but B was already up and running around with the Tykes of Terror and I  have to be up and out by this time tomorrow for the 5 Boro bike ride, so up I went.

Still sore from Thursday's work out, especially in the upper arms and chest. Haven't been sore in those spots in a while, should I be doing push ups under weight to be more effective?

AM SNACK: 6:30am, iced green tea

AM SNACK: 8:30am, cold vegetable lomein, .25 bowl, hunger 4/5

BREAKFAST: 10:30am, organic wholegrain chex with organic dead milk, .75 bowl, hunger 4/5

LUNCH: 12:30pm, momma salad, 4 smallish school meatballs with some homemade sauce, 8oz sprite, 1 bowl, hunger 4/5

PM SNACKING: 4-6pm, orzo salad, 2 nice cheeses with bread & crackers, 1 mini knish, a few mini cupcakes, 2/3 of a beer, .75 bowl, hunger 4/5
At a 3 yr old's party in Jersey, good food, though I didn't eat much of it -- the 2/3 of a beer made my tired self very light headed, so I stopped. I brought mini knishes, ate 1 just to check to make sure it was defrosted and heated OK.

DINNER: 9pm, Stouffer's French Bread pizzas, 1.25 bowl, hunger 4/5

No Tequila Involved, but Still

Woke up with a sour cookie-filled stomach, a whole new set of sore muscles from Edie lying on my back while I did my push ups, and a screamin' baby. I guess this is the middle-aged equivalent of waking up from a night of drinking a bottle of tequila the night before and realizing you broke up with your girlfriend, but don't quite remember the details. Oof!

Spent the morning knishing it up. B was home early enough to take Milli, so I picked up Edie on the big bike and took her to the Bike Expo in the neighborhood, followed up by an hour in the park. Ordered in dinner then had a nice digestive bike ride up to the UES to deliver some knishes. Took Central Park back in the dark, road through Times Square. Such a beautiful city!

TODAY'S COOKING
Knishes: Dough made yesterday, onions made a few weeks ago, all good. Boiled 15 lbs of potato, made a one big tray of basic potato onion, then separated in thirds and made a spinach-garlic mix and a broccoli cheddar mix. Baked 3 dozen full size knishes in one round, about 100 minis in a 2nd round. Have left over mix and dough, may cook off a few more dozen early next week. Supplying a new shop on Sunday with knishes, want to be ready if they sell out and reorder fast. Risky and inefficient, but hey, I'm just a dude with one account!

AM SNACK: 7:15am, iced green tea

BREAKFAST: 9:45am, smoothie, 1 bowl, hunger 4/5

LUNCH: 1:45pm, potato knish, broc-ched knish, 8oz sprite, .75 bowl, hunger 4/5

EVENING SNACK: 9:30pm, left over dinner, 8oz sprite, .25 bowl, hunger 4/5

Old School Scarfin'

Had some insane dreams about being locked in a room with some strangers in a post-apocalyptic world. Only I wasn't me, I was Jason Sudekis from SNL....

Woke up at 6:30 so I could get stuff done, lift weights, make knish dough, go out and pick up my packet for the 5 Boro, and other chores. Split at 2pm for teaching. Went grocery shopping after, then did laundry while winding down.

Didn't eat much at school, and ended up picking up a few indulgent things at the supermarket, which I scarfed down, old school style. Like, how I used to scarf before I went to c-school. How I used to scarf when I was in college. How I use to scarf as a kid. I used to do the whole-box-of-Entemann's-Chocolate-Chip-Cookies thing quite often in college, and that came from the comfort that particular brand of cookie gave me as a kid, as it was the kind of chocolate chip cookie my parents would very rarely have in the house. Despite my homemade c-chip cookies being vastly superior, those cookies really bring me back to a time when my parents were around to protect and love me. -sigh-. Cookies....

TODAY'S COOKING
Knish Dough: Boiled up 5 lbs of potatoes to make 2 double batches of knish dough, came out pretty good, except I left my food mill at school so I had to use my mom's old potato masher. Not the biggest deal, as the gluten sticky glueness caused by a masher doesn't really hurt the quality of the dough. For a filling, no-go, but dough, fine.

AM SNACK: 6:45am, iced green tea

BREAKFAST: 8:45am, hardcore oatmeal, banana, .75 bowl, hunger 4/5
Added too much salt, it is still edible but just slightly past the point where it goes from tastes BIG to tastes a little salty.

AM SNACK: 10:45am, homemade granola bar, water, .25 bowl, hunger 4/5

LUNCH: 12:45pm, eggplant hero with no cheese, house salad, 1.25 bowl, hunger 4/5

SCHOOL DINNER: 7pm, whipped potatoes, chard & onions, sauteed chicken, sprite, .5 bowl, hunger 4/5

EVENING SNACK: 10pm, 2 Jamaican beef patties, box of chocolate chip cookies, 1.5 bowl, hunger 4/5

Sugar Bender

Lazy morning, just chilling and moving slow. Taught Italian food in class, or more specifically, Italian-American, he he. Sugar cravings took over in the evening, I've been on a sugar bender, lately...

AM SNACK: 8am, iced green tea

BREAKFAST: 9:15am, 2 pieces french toast, .75 bowl, hunger 4/5
From the weekend, microwaved. Reheating really brought it's egginess out, almost too eggy.

LUNCH: 12:45pm, PB&J on whole wheat toast, momma salad, pickle, 1 bowl, hunger 4/5

PM SNACK: 2:30pm, 2 cookies, .25 bowl, hunger 4/5

SCHOOL DINNER: 6:45pm,  fresh spagetti in red sauce with meatballs, fresh linguine with basil pesto and fried shrimp, broccoli frascatti, some Sprite, 1 bowl, hunger 4/5
It would have been easy to over eat this meal, and all the kids piled their plates high and gobbled it down. I had 1 2-oz meat ball, maybe 6 oz pasta total, maybe 3 oz of shrimp, and some (but not enough) broccoli. Looking at the kid's plates, they were doing 3 meatballs, close to a pound of pasta, no broccoli. -sigh-

EVENING SNACK: 9:30pm, milano cookies, water, 1 bowl, hunger 4/5
I wonder if a lack of water made my sugar cravings bigger... I drank tea and soda, but no water up to this point today...

Too Many Sweets

228.0--->231--->229.8

Weight is pretty much at a standstill, though I feel stronger from the weights, and though still not visible to the naked (or, eh, the clothed) eye, my muscles seem to be doing something. I wonder if I'll be able to get enough biking in this season to make any difference.

TODAY'S COOKING
Granola bars: Heated a pot of maple syrup, almond butter, flax, spirulina, salt & vanilla, 3 eggs. Mixed with the granola, pressed into a lined glass pan, baked at 300 for 20 minutes.

Brown Rice & Lentils: Added brown lentils to a brown rice mix of short grain brown rice, wheat berries & wild rice. Cumin, tumeric, a little curry, salt, bay leaves, peanut oil, onion powder, garlic powder. Put in rice cooker, walked away. Tasted ok, B seems to like it.

AM SNACK: 9am, iced green tea

BREAKFAST: 9:45am, brown rice crispies w/organic dead milk, .5 bowl, hunger 4/5

LUNCH: 12:30pm, veggie burger sub on wholewheat, a few potato chips, orange soda, 1.25 bowl, hunger 4/5
Lunch at Subway.

PM SNACK: 1:30pm, brownie, .25 bowl, hunger 4/5
Just kinda craving a sweet snack, stopped in a bakery on St. Marks place. Looked better than it tasted. Too greasy, not chocolatey enough. I'm not a professional baker, but when I go into a bakery, I always kinda expect a brownie or chocolate chip cookie to be easily be superior to what I can make. Then I remember oh, wait, I actually went to c-school and learned how to make it just as good. And since I'm making 1 small batch for fun with the best ingredients I can find rather than 100s and 100s day after day using the cheapest ingredients possible, it shouldn't be surprising. But it always is surprising. If not surprising, disappointing.

DINNER: 6:30pm, chicken nuggets, lentils & brown rice, momma salad, 1 bowl, hunger 4/5

EVENING SNACK: 8pm, hot dog, pint of grenadine soda, 1 bowl, hunger 4/5
Dinner wasn't big enough, got huge sugar cravings. I guess the soda and brownie from earlier in the day primed the pump.

Get-R-Done

Had a knishery meeting in the morning, cooked up some granola, lifted weights, cooked lunch, zoned out in front of the TV for an hour. Picked up Edie, spent 2 hours in a playground, went back to school and met B, had a parent-teacher conference for Edie (all is well), went out to eat, home, out again to visit the HVS. Now I see why I got so tired! Got home, got laundry in, chores, slid back into TV land before sleep...

TODAY'S COOKING:
Granola: Riffed on the olive oil granola recipe, with a mix of cashews, pepitas, slivered almonds, sunflower seeds. Halved the sweetener. Added vanilla.

AM SNACK: 8:15am, iced green tea

BREAKFAST: 9:15am, smoothie, 1 bowl, hunger 4/5
New fruit mix, blueberries, cherries, peaches, mango, half portions of raspberries, blackberries and pineapple.

LUNCH: 1:15pm, whole wheat spaghetti with homemade sauce and boiled shrimp, water, 1 bowl, hunger 4/5
Again, 4oz of dry pasta -- not too much, but still 2x the USDA serving size. Amazes me every time.

PM SNACK: 3:15pm, spicy vegetable empanada, .25 bowl, hunger 4/5
Tofu was minced and became an effective meat-substitute in this spicy, well-flavored mushy vegetable mix.

DINNER: 5:45pm, chicken pesto sandwich, small side salad, a few french fries, water, 1 bowl, hunger 4/5
At Petisco with the fam, after Edie's parent-teacher conference.

EVENING SNACK: 9:30pm, chocolate chips & peanuts, .25 bowl, hunger 4/5

Sunday, April 29

I'm sorry, Tom. I know I can do better.

I thought Mil would wake me up early, but he roused me at 8am, so I rushed to get out the door ASAP to meet team members at 9am at Prospect Park. I made it, got there at 8:59, but had to ride while eating donuts instead of eating a proper breakfast.

I failed Tom Cruise and ate a little bit too healthily, but only a little bit. Lunch was strictly freezer fishin', but instead of ugly deep fried things, burgers and hot dogs, out emerged broiled fish and roasted brussel sprouts, he he. But I was saved by a dinner party with a bunch of other couples with kids, where pizza and ice cream and wine were the menu.

AM SNACK: 8am, iced green tea

AM SNACK: 8:30am, 2 donuts, .5 bowl, hunger 4/5

AM SNACK:11:45am, 20oz Gatorade, .25 bowl, hunger 4/5

PM SNACK: 3:45pm, chocolate chips & almonds, .25 bowl, hunger 4/5

DINNER: 5pm, 3 slices pizza, small ice cream bar, half glass of wine, 1 bowl, hunger 4/5
